Making the Most of MU*Wiki

From WikiMU*

Contents

[edit] Introduction

The MU*Wiki provides easy and free methods of promoting your text-based online RPG. All it takes is a little familiarity with Wiki code, which is much easier than learning HTML and only a little more complicated than formats used in most online forums.

Here in the MU*Wiki, you're welcome to just promote your game in the discussion forums. But if you really want to make the most of your presence here, you'll find that more is more. We've got five possible facets of visibility. If you're looking to maximize a return on your investment of effort, we recommend employing all of these facets to provide your game the visibility it deserves.

  • MU* Promotional Pages: A basic page that talks about your game.
  • Character Pages: Individual pages that spotlight characters from your game.
  • Stories: Fiction created about your game and the characters within it.
  • Artwork: Artwork inspired by your game and the characters within it.
  • Walled Gardens: Networks of pages focused on one game, including the promotional page, stories, artwork, character pages, game system help files.

[edit] MU* Promotional Pages

On these pages, you should include the game, website address, Telnet address, and at least a bare minimum amount of theme information. Set the category for [[category:List of MU*s]] and any other category that applies, whether it's Fantasy or Sci-Fi or Free or Pay-to-Play (among others).

We've also got code for a box of information that can include who hosts the game, who runs it, etc.

For a good example of a MU* Promotional Page, check out the one for EdenMUSH.

[edit] Character Pages

Players who want to immortalize their character histories can use these pages to do so. We've even got a handy template box for basic character information and images.

For an example, check out Jantine's page.

[edit] Stories

If you or your players have stories to tell about characters and events within the game world, here's where you could put them - with or without illustrations: It's up to you!

A good example of a story page: A Shuttle, a Hovertruck, and Plush Tractor by Yseult and Volanta.

[edit] Artwork

Although our games are text-focused, it's never a good idea to underestimate the power of visuals to accompany imaginative stories.

If you've got artists playing your game, encourage them to share artwork based on games here in the MU*Wiki.

[edit] Walled Gardens

Effectively, these are satellite websites for your game, containing everything listed above plus help files, roleplaying logs, RP theory articles, and pretty much anything else you can think of that might be of interest to people perusing games like yours.

The idea is that people wander in, find your MU*Wiki site, get caught up in what you're offering, and then, once snared, drop in to the actual MU* for a visit.

A good example of a MU*Wiki walled garden is OtherSpace.
